Education Workshops - June:  Enclosed you will find BACPs June workshops calendar for distribution.   This month we feature a great workshop on how to start your concession at O'Hare airport, another on Trademarks and Copyrights as well as Spanish workshop on How to Start your Business.  Participants can take advantage of the Business Start-Up Certificate Program which is essential for anyone starting or growing a business! Digital TV Conversion - June 4 & 5:  Are you ready for the Digital Conversion?  BACP is partnering with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to educate folks on the Digital Transition taking place June 12. The FCC will be signing up people for "converter box coupons" and conducting presentations on how to properly install the converter box.  Stop by City Hall Lobby and get all the information you need or visit us at www.cityofchicago.org/bacp

Shredder Day Event - June 20:  In helping to reduce identity theft, the BACP is partnering with various local, state and federal agencies to hold a citywide Shredder Day event, where consumers can shred up to 10 boxes of documents for free.  Please attend this event Saturday, June 20th from 9am to 2pm at the United Center. Business Works at Truman College -June 25: Our 2nd Business Works Seminar will be taking place at Truman College on Thursday, June 25th.  We will have about 30 government agencies, free workshops and opportunities to network with other businesses in the area.  Get all the information you need - from inspections, licensing to what agencies can help you with your business plan - all at one location! Survive The Economy - August 19:  Consumers are challenged by the housing crisis, they can't get credit and on top of it all are being defrauded by companies who claim to help the.  At BACP's Survive the Economy events, consumers can obtain important information about consumer fraud, talk to housing and credit counselors about their many issues and concerns.  We have partnered with the Federal Trade Commission, the US Postal Inspector, the Attorney General's Office, Neighborhood Housing Services and Money Management International and Harris Bank to provide consumers answer they need to their mounting problems. ALERT
Digital Television Conversion will take place JUNE 12!  According to the FCC the Chicagoland area is considered an area importance at this time because the largest number of inquiries and concerns were reported as coming from Chicago.  BACP will be working with the FCC over the next two weeks to inform residents about the switch.  If you are not prepared, on June 13 when you turn on your television set, you may not have any transmission at all.   HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER:  If you do not have a digital TV and rely on antenna reception (not pay TV, cable or satellite service) to receive your local stations, you will need to "Get Ready" to ensure continued reception of your local stations.
1)  GET a Converter Box Coupon
2)  BUY a Converter Box
3)  INSTALL a Converter Box
4)  FIX Reception Problems
Go to www. dtv.gov to sign up for a coupon - which saves you $40 dollars on the converter box and will more than likely take 9 days for you to receive it.  for all the information you need on the transition


LEGISLATIVE

BPA Ordinance - City Council passed an ordinance May 13, 2009 making Chicago the first U.S. city to ban bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles and sippy cups.  This ordinance will go into effect in 2010 and bans the sale of any empty food or drink container containing BPA that is intended for use by children less than 3 years old.  We will provide you more information as in the coming months on business requirements and any licensing and enforcement measures associated with this ordinance.

Repossesors License--- the Repossessor License became law on May 5, 2009.  Some repossessor businesses are still operating without proper licensing.    Requirements:  Repossessors engaged in the location, disposition, or recovery of collateral as authorized by the self-help provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code, 810 ILCS 5/1 et seq are required to obtain a City license from BACP:
 -- Class A licenses are required for legal entities engaging in the business of a repossessor in the City of Chicago.
 -- Class B licenses are required for natural persons engaging in the business of a repossessor in the City of Chicago.
All employees of entities requiring Class A licenses under the ordinance, must obtain Class B licenses if engaging in the physical recovery of collateral in the City of Chicago.   Applicants must be at least 18 years, complete the Certified Asset Recovery Specialist (C.A.R.S.) national certification program, submit proof of liability insurance, and submit to a criminal background check.  The fee for a two-year Class A license is $600.00 and $300.00 for a Class B license.  Violators can be fined up to $2,500.00 per offense.  To download this ordinance visit our website at www.cityofchicago.org/businessaffairs and go to Ordinances.
